Villa Belpoggio-Paciocchi is a mid-17th century villa located in a hilly suburb of Bologna currently used as an eating-disorders non-profit clinic. Its new owner launched a design competition seeking architects under 31 to design the new guardian house and his eventual family in the villa’s beautiful sloping garden surrounded by protected trees. Programmed dimensions are 80m² house plus a 16m² storage and a €200,000 limited budget.
The role of the occupant and the context suggest a strong connection with nature as well as the existing harmonious neoclassical residence. At the same time, it’s necessary to define privacy boundaries for the occupant, according to the morphology of the area. A conceptual solution consists of focusing the openings on the opposite side of the villa, facing the southern landscape and permitting good use of daylight too.
The resulting design is a massive lot-shaped basement and a timber mono-pitched roof structure on the top. A polycarbonate skin covers all the dry wooden frame maintaining a clear geometry and widely providing dynamic illumination from the southern curtain wall and from the windowed roof. On the northern blind facade there are the only access points to the house.
Villa Belpoggio-Paciocchi è una villa di metà del XVII secolo situata in un sobborgo collinare di Bologna attualmente utilizzata come clinica non profit per disturbi alimentari. Il nuovo proprietario ha lanciato un concorso di progettazione per giovani architetti under 31 per progettare la nuova casa del custode e la sua eventuale famiglia nel bellissimo giardino in pendenza della villa circondato da alberi protetti. Le dimensioni programmate sono una casa di 80m² più un magazzino di 16m² e un budget limitato di €200.000.
Il ruolo dell'abitante e il contesto suggeriscono una forte connessione con la natura così come con l’armonica residenza neoclassica esistente. Allo stesso tempo, è necessario definire confini di privacy per l’abitante, secondo la morfologia dell’area. Una soluzione concettuale consiste nel focalizzare le aperture sul lato opposto della villa, rivolte verso il paesaggio meridionale, permettendo anche un buon uso della luce naturale.
Il progetto risultante è un ampio seminterrato a forma di lotto e una struttura con tetto monofalda in legno sulla parte superiore. Una pelle in policarbonato copre tutta la struttura in legno a secco mantenendo una geometria chiara e fornendo una vasta illuminazione dinamica dalla parete a tenda meridionale e dal tetto finestrato. Sul lato cieco settentrionale ci sono gli unici punti di accesso alla casa.

Jahrhunderts, die sich in einem hügeligen Vorort von Bologna befindet und derzeit als gemeinnützige Klinik für Essstörungen genutzt wird. Der neue Eigentümer hat einen Designwettbewerb für Architekten unter 31 Jahren ausgeschrieben, um das neue Wächterhaus und seine zukünftige Familie in dem wunderschönen, von geschützten Bäumen umgebenen Hanggarten der Villa zu entwerfen. Die geplanten Maße sind ein 80m² großes Haus plus ein 16m² großer Abstellraum und ein begrenztes Budget von €200.000.
Die Rolle des Bewohners und der Kontext deuten auf eine starke Verbindung zur Natur sowie zu der bestehenden harmonischen neoklassischen Residenz hin. Gleichzeitig ist es notwendig, Privatsphären-Grenzen für den Bewohner entsprechend der Morphologie des Gebiets zu definieren. Eine konzeptionelle Lösung besteht darin, die Öffnungen auf die gegenüberliegende Seite der Villa zu fokussieren, die sich zur südlichen Landschaft hin öffnet, und so auch eine gute Nutzung des Tageslichts zu ermöglichen.
Das resultierende Design ist ein massiver, losförmiger Keller und eine Holzkonstruktion mit Pultdach an der Spitze. Eine Polycarbonat-Hülle bedeckt den gesamten trockenen Holzrahmen, behält eine klare Geometrie bei und sorgt für eine breite dynamische Beleuchtung von der südlichen Vorhangfassade und vom verglasten Dach. An der nördlichen, blinden Fassade befinden sich die einzigen Zugangspunkte zum Haus.
